Our position

Serious training without ego. Strength with restraint. A collective, not a crowd.

Arete · (ah-REH-tay)

An ancient Greek word meaning excellence — not just in skill, but in character, effort, and the pursuit of one's highest potential. It is the idea our academy is built on, and the standard we train toward on the mats and off them.

The Collective

Five pillars of practice

I

Excellence

Constant improvement through deliberate practice and attention to detail.

II

Discipline

Showing up, embracing challenges, and committing to the process.

III

Community

An environment where students support each other's growth.

IV

Humility

Remaining open to learning regardless of experience or rank.

V

Adaptability

Solving problems both on and off the mats.

The pursuit of excellence through practice.
Coaching Philosophy

We teach you to understand concepts, not memorize techniques. The goal is not knowing more moves. It is becoming a better problem solver — under pressure, with a thinking partner across from you.

Ian Joubert — founder and head instructor of Arete Jiu Jitsu Collective
Founder & Head Instructor

Ian Joubert

Ian Joubert’s journey in Jiu Jitsu was built through years of commitment, sacrifice, and consistency. For much of his journey, Ian balanced training with serving as a United States Army Reservist and working full-time as a Quality Engineer. Nights and weekends were spent on the mats — training, studying, and competing while managing the demands of work and military service.

Over more than 16 years in Jiu Jitsu, Ian progressed through every belt level while consistently testing himself in competition at nearly every belt rank. The challenges of competing, combined with years of balancing responsibilities outside the academy, shaped his belief that progress comes from showing up, embracing adversity, and continually pursuing improvement. His military experience and time assisting with the Modern Army Combatives Program further reinforced the values of discipline, accountability, and teamwork that guide his approach to coaching.

After years of training, competing, and teaching, Ian left his professional career to pursue Jiu Jitsu full-time and ultimately founded Arete Jiu Jitsu Collective. Today, his goal is to build an academy centered on the pursuit of excellence — helping students develop technical skill, confidence, resilience, and the discipline to become better both on and off the mats.

Common questions

Before your first class

Do I need any experience to start?

No. Most people walk in having never grappled before. Your first classes are about learning the basics at your own pace — with training partners who remember being new.

Do I need to be in shape first?

You get in shape by training — not before it. Show up as you are; the mats will take care of the rest.

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable athletic wear — a t-shirt and shorts or leggings work fine. No shoes on the mats. Don't buy a gi before you've tried a class; we'll point you in the right direction when you're ready.

Will I have to spar on day one?

No. Live training is part of how we learn, but you'll never be thrown in before you're ready. Discipline over ego — that includes how we welcome beginners.

Is Jiu-Jitsu safe?

Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport, but our room is built around control and restraint. Training is structured, coached, and ego-free — you and your partners look after each other.
